Kokeshis timides

Adorable old Sosaku or "creative" Kokeshis, their faces turn to shyly hide... The large, varnished one is decorated with landscapes and hiraganas, the small one with a kimono.

These dolls, filled with poetry and nature, were originally made for children, then offered as a sign of love or friendship, and brought back by the Japanese as souvenirs and small gifts from various spa regions. They could also symbolize the wish for a healthy child. These are handcrafted creations which, along with the paintings and haikus that adorn them, evoke the beauty of the landscape and the fascinating culture of the archipelago. This type of Kokeshi is no longer made in Japan.
