Lovely Kokeshi decorated with a bridge landscape and hiraganas. The whole is wood sculpted and painted to the hand with a part of bark.

These dolls, filled with poetry and nature, were originally made for children and then offered as a sign of love or friendship, and brought back by the Japanese as souvenirs and small gifts from various spa regions. They could also symbolize the wish for a healthy child. These handcrafted creations, with their paintings and little haikus, evoke the beauty of the landscape and the fascinating culture of the archipelago. Today, Omiyage Kokeshis, or "souvenirs" like this one, are no longer made in Japan.
